Honoree: Waymann Carlson / Decade of 1990′s

Message: Dr. Carlson’s kind heart and caring demeanor was a bright spot on the SCC campus. How fitting that a candle be placed in his honor. Dr. Carlson opened the door for me to earn my teaching credential in special education, sadly a program that left with him. My wish when this candle gets blown out, is that Dr. Carlson’s life be celebrated and that a special education credential program returns to Vanguard. It is my prayer that the students of Vanguard are able to graduate with the opportunity to teach God’s special children with the caring that they deserve and would receive from Vanguard students.

Honoree: Decade of 1960′s / Pat Guerra

Message: Pat was very involved during his time at Vanguard (SCC). He held class offices, played on the football team, was instrumental in bringing the gym over from OCC, sang in the choir, and was involved in many other activities. During his time there he took a year off to go to the Phillipines with YWAM. Serving God was very important to him. We also met in our Senior year and married soon after. He loved SCC and was so proud that all three of our sons chose to attend there. Pat taught school for 25 years, coached our sons yearround in all sports, and was youth group leader at Alta Loma Assembly of God for 8 years. Being an example to young people was important to him. He passed away in 2007 but his influence goes on.

Message: Since starting as staff in 2006, Vanguard has continue to bless my life! I can see, and feel, God’s work in countless friendships, life stories, divine appointments, and community interactions. Through my personal Vanguard journey, I’ve been blessed with many wonderful connections and completing my MBA. The Vanguard experience as current staff, and graduate, are most treasured—I hold fast to the scripture in Jeremiah 29:11 for both VUSC and my life journey…Happy 90th Vanguard and thank you to the leadership team that has guided us through since 1920 to 2011, we love you!

Message: Bill Severn was a great athlete and a tremendous Christian. He was great as a one on one witness of the mercy of God. I learned a lot as how to be tough in seemingly insurmountable situations. I am glad that he is my friend forever. Unfortunately for us Bill went to his eternal reward a few years back. Fortunately for Bill he is enjoying the fruit of his labor.
Sincerely, Jack Nelson, Class of 1961.

    Honoree: Decade of 1960′s

Message: I honor the commitment of the school to daily chapel. It was there as a new Christian and new to all things Pentecostal that I experienced deep and lasting works of the Holy Spirit in my life that kept and deepened my faith in seminary and provided the formation for my life as a Christian that influences me and all that I do to this day, and as a pastor now for almost 40 years. I have always been and will always be deeply grateful to a sovereign God who placed my life in the family of faith called Southern California College. It is also where the the Lord brought the most wonderful person in my life into my life, Ruth Siegrist from Switzerland – 44 years this December we have been married, and I honor her – she attended three school years, 1962-1965. I honor all students and professors whose lives also were used by the Lord in the formation of my life and faith in ways that have stood me in good stead to this day. Finally I honor all supportive school staff whose selfless service made possible the environment that was SCC in the early to mid 60′s. I write this from Albania where Ruth and I have been serving annually since 2004 Philippians 1:6.
